Ok, now that the shameless plug is over...Helldivers 2. Man. What can I say about this game that hasn't been spoken for itself already? The overall majority of people I've seen play it, as well as my own experience...well, it's been pretty great! And for $40 bucks on the PS store or PC? Can't really beat the bang for your buck that you get. Literally.
To start, this game is super light on the story angle of things. If you are into a deep storyline, this will not be the game for you. If you are into a solid, full of action co-op experience, then look no further. Diving in(ha!), from the gate you are in the middle of the action. Giant swarms of bugs, or tons of robots, flinging whatever they can at you to knock you out of the picture and to let them continue their destruction of said Democracy. If you have spent any time on Twitch, Kick, TikTok, wherever you catch your favorite streamer, and have seen any of this gameplay, I'm sure you heard of the infamous Mavelon Creek. It is one of the planets in the Severin Sector and boy oh boy, the fighting there is absolutely insane. Just hit any of those social platforms and search for it. It'll turn up, guaranteed.
Pros: Co-op play is absolutely beside itself as long as you have a vocal team and not a bunch of deaf-mutes, but even then it's not the worst. Since the server queue issue dissipated, matchmaking and loading in is very good now. Gunplay is solid and satisfying.
Cons: Not a fan of the running/movements of the game, but that's my lacking of gameplay since I've only put in a handful of rounds in this. Also, while the whole reloading of the gun is a complete manual action, as well as firing one being a 2-person thing is pretty cool, it's also a huge culture shock to a lot of people who just aren't accustomed to that style of play from any angle. Same goes for the calling of reinforcements or supplies, or even airstrikes; having to put in a 'cheat code' type input while in the heat of battle is fun and all but other mechanics could be in play such as things going into slow-mo while you input the code, etc. Just some opposing ideas.
Overall, I give this game a 8.5/10. Mainly because of how big of an impact the initial server issue caused. And mostly driven from the cons I listed above. It's a great experience either way, no matter what you take away from this. Give it a shot! You won't find it as a lost $40 but a gained new experience!
Until next time, Alcoholics!
